Reusable formwork as part of a production system

Reusable U-beam formwork must do more than reproduce a concrete shape. In station-based production, each mould also interacts with reinforcement work, concrete supply, vibration, curing, inspection and component release. The value of the system depends on how consistently these interfaces can be repeated over the planned production programme.

Realjet configures the steel mould around the U-beam geometry and then reviews how the formwork fits into the factory workflow. The number of mould sets, spacing between lines, access platforms, travel routes and curing positions are determined from the output target and cycle assumptions.

Design priorities

  • durable fabricated frames for repeated production use;
  • steel contact plates developed for the approved component profile;
  • accessible mould joints, locks and adjustment points;
  • mechanical or hydraulic opening selected according to component release needs;
  • platform and guardrail arrangements for routine work at height;
  • interfaces for vibration, concrete placement and embedded-item installation;
  • maintenance access for cylinders, hinges, fasteners and reference points.

Reusable does not mean universal. The mould remains project-specific, and any adjustable or replaceable sections must be defined within an approved dimensional range. Cleaning, release-agent application and inspection procedures should also be included in the production plan.

Typical uses

This formwork concept is suited to precast factories producing repeated U-beams for highways, viaducts, urban transport and related infrastructure. A station-based layout can help organise specialised work areas while keeping mould movement and curing occupancy visible to the production team.

Key inputs include the component schedule, daily output, shift pattern, reinforcement process, curing duration, crane coverage and available building dimensions. These inputs determine whether the project should use fixed moulds, movable moulds or a combination of both.
