Organising production around defined stations

A station-based movable mould system separates the precast beam cycle into planned work areas. Instead of bringing every process and tool to one fixed casting bed, the mould or mould carrier moves between positions assigned to preparation, reinforcement, concrete placement, curing, release and inspection.

This concept can improve visibility of production flow, but it requires accurate coordination of cycle times and movement routes. A delay at one station can affect every mould behind it, so equipment capacity and buffer positions must be developed from a realistic production model.

System characteristics

  • movable steel moulds or mould-carrying platforms designed for the component family;
  • rail routes and transfer equipment connecting production stations;
  • defined locating and locking points at each operating position;
  • fixed process equipment placed where it can serve multiple moulds;
  • interfaces for reinforcement, concrete distribution, vibration and curing;
  • production access and crane coverage planned across the full route;
  • control boundaries selected for manual, assisted or automated movement.

The system may use hydraulic formwork functions, powered trolleys, fixed pulling devices or other transfer methods. The appropriate arrangement depends on component mass, movement frequency, factory length and the degree of automation required.

Where movable mould systems are used

Station-based systems are suitable for repeated production of bridge beams, U-girders and other elongated precast elements. They can be used in permanent factories or large project yards where output targets justify dedicated stations and controlled curing capacity.

Planning inputs should include the product mix, cycle time, number of moulds, curing duration, shift pattern, maintenance strategy and finished-product storage route. Utilities, drainage, rail foundations and future expansion should be reviewed before the layout is frozen.
