Most buyers of made-to-drawing fabrication focus on the quote. The work that protects the schedule actually starts after the order is placed, when the supplier opens the drawings and checks whether every dimension, tolerance and interface can be built and verified as written. A disciplined drawing review catches conflicts before steel is cut, not after a part fails inspection.
This guide covers what a fabrication drawing review looks for, how deviations are handled, and which inputs buyers should supply so the review moves quickly. It applies to welded machinery frames, machined brackets and interfaces, equipment chassis, hydraulic tanks and similar custom steel components built to customer drawings.
What the technical review checks
A contract manufacturer does not simply read a drawing and start cutting. The review confirms that the document set is internally consistent and manufacturable. Typical checks include:
- Datum and tolerance logic. Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing must follow one named standard. ASME Y14.5 defines the US convention for datums, position and runout; ISO 8015 and ISO 1101 define the international GPS (Geometrical Product Specification) approach, including the independency principle. If the title block names no standard, the shop must guess, and a wrong guess costs money.
- Size and geometric tolerances. General tolerances such as ISO 2768 cover features without individual callouts, but critical fits, bores and mounting faces need explicit controls. The review checks that tight tolerances are justified by function and that form controls do not fight the size tolerance.
- Weld requirements. Welding symbols, joint types, inspection levels and procedure references should match the material and loading. AWS D1.1 governs structural steel welding and is a common reference for welded frames and bases.
- Drawing versus BOM consistency. The bill of materials, the assembly drawing and the individual part drawings must agree on quantities, materials and revisions.
- Interface coordination. Machined interfaces, bolt patterns, shaft sizes and sensor mounts must line up with the mating equipment the component connects to.
When these elements are clear, the review is short. When they conflict, the supplier raises a query before committing labour.
How deviations are flagged and resolved
A deviation is any point where the as-drawn requirement cannot be met as written, or where meeting it would require an undocumented assumption. Common examples include a tolerance that demands a process the material does not support, a datum that cannot be physically located, or a dimension that conflicts with another on the same part.
The supplier records the issue as a request for information or a non-conformance query and states what is affected. Resolution depends on who owns the decision:
- Design responsibility sits with the drawing issuer. The designer confirms design intent and decides whether a relaxed value, a redrawn feature or a different process is acceptable.
- Manufacturing responsibility sits with the supplier. The supplier states what can be built reliably with its equipment and proposes a workable route.
- Acceptance responsibility is shared. Final acceptance criteria, inspection evidence and any concession are agreed in writing before production proceeds.
The point is timing. A deviation caught during review is a drawing correction. The same deviation found after welding is a rework, a scrap risk and a schedule hit. Buyers who want predictable lead times should expect their supplier to raise queries early rather than quietly absorbing ambiguity.
Change control once fabrication has started
Drawing changes after release are normal, but they are not free. A change to a raw plate before cutting costs little. The same change after machining, welding and coating can mean scrapping finished work. Good suppliers run a simple rule: any change is re-quoted or confirmed in writing, the affected lots are identified, and the new revision is controlled so old and new drawings cannot be mixed on the floor.
Buyers should name a single technical contact for drawing queries. When every engineer on the project can issue verbal changes, revisions get lost and the build drifts. One controlled channel keeps the record clean.
What buyers should supply to shorten the review
The fastest reviews come from complete, consistent packages. Before requesting fabrication, suppliers benefit from:
- A single governed standard named in the title block, such as ASME Y14.5-2018 or ISO 8015 with ISO 1101, so inspection is interpreted one way.
- A critical-feature list that marks which dimensions actually affect fit or function, so the shop can prioritise inspection instead of measuring everything to the same strictness.
- Interface drawings for mating parts, especially machined faces, bolt circles and shaft connections.
- Material certificates and any welding procedure or inspection-level requirements stated up front, not discovered during production.
- The current revision of every drawing in the set, with the BOM matching those revisions.

Where responsibility sits
The division of responsibility is worth stating plainly so there are no surprises at acceptance:
- The designer owns geometry, function and design intent. The supplier builds to the approved drawing, not to a guessed intent.
- The supplier owns a manufacturable route, welding and machining quality, and honest reporting of what was achieved versus the drawing.
- The buyer owns acceptance criteria and the commercial decision to accept a documented concession.
